HISTORY OF THE
SILVER LAKE LANDFILL
AND CONTREVERSY SURROUNDING THE SPRINGFIELD STREET

Toxic Waste In The Area
During 1997 a lawsuit was filed against the city of Providence regarding living conditions on the landfill site. Landfills can produce odors and gas can move through soil and collect in nearby buildings. Of the gases produced in landfills, ammonia, sulfides, methane, and carbon dioxide are of most concern.
This can cause serious health issues, including mental and physical. Hallucinations, mental breaks, anger outbursts, and psychosis can
become present through exposure.
Building Schools
In 1999 planning began to develop the neighborhood further by building two schools on the land; one elementary school and one middle school. The middle school was originally named Springfield middle school after the name of the street it was built on.
Student Incident
In 2002 the name of school was changed to Del Sesto middle school after an incident somehow related to the toxic waste. The details of the were never fully disclosed, but info was leaked that it supposedly involved a missing student.
Staff running the school decided it would be best to give the school a new name and a new outlook moving forward. A special state-of-the-art ventilation system was installed in the school's mechanical room to mitigate the toxins.
